Molybdenum belongs to the transition metals. It is high-strength, hard and tough. The element is well formable and machinable. It has the highest melting point of all metals of the 5th period. Molybdenum metal is not susceptible to non-oxidizing acids. It also shows insensitivity to oxidizing alkaline melts. In oxidizing acids (concentrated sulfuric acid, nitric acid, or aqua regia), the metal is well soluble. Due to the formation of the oxide layer, it is stable in air.
