h12mf is a chrome-molybdenum-vanadium tool steel. The material designation h12mf means:

• H12 - about 12% chromium;
• M - about 1% molybdenum;
• F - about 1% vanadium.

The iron content of this GOST steel is approx. 84%. The carbon content is approx. 1.5%. Chromium ensures excellent cutting properties, high strength and wear resistance as well as good through-hardening. Molybdenum provides high toughness, but at the same time lowers the scale resistance. For this reason, the molybdenum content in the alloy should not exceed 1.4% - 1.8%. Vanadium increases the tensile strength and makes the alloy more hardenable.
