The main difference between 65s2va and other steels of this class is its composition. The base of the alloy is iron (Fe), which must make up no less than 94.4% of the alloy.

The composition also contains many other components. Each of these components affects the properties of the alloy. In particular, carbon increases the strength of the material but reduces weldability; manganese increases the strength of the metal; silicon, chromium, and nickel increase toughness as well as heat and corrosion resistance; tungsten extends the hardness range of the steel and reduces its brittleness; copper prevents rust formation.
