Thulium belongs to the group of lanthanides and is counted among the rare earths (atomic number 69). The metal is very soft and can be excellently stretched and forged. In dry air, thulium is stable, while in humid air it forms a gray oxide layer. At higher temperatures, the metal converts to Tm₂O₃ (sesquioxide). With water, thulium reacts while releasing hydrogen to form the hydroxide. The metal also dissolves in mineral acids with hydrogen evolution.

Due to its limited properties, thulium is used in only a few areas:

• TV and laser devices;
• as a dopant;
• as a source of X-ray radiation (gamma emitter).

Thulium is characterized by the following properties:

• very soft;
• well forgeable and malleable;
• resistant to dry air;
• soluble in mineral acids.
